WIT History

WIT began as a small group of women in the Washington DC tech community, united by the belief that our voices are stronger together. It was a time when these women were not just the only females in their team meetings – they were often the only females in their divisions – and they were sometimes the only females in their entire companies.

Founded in 1994 by Valerie Perlowitz, WIT has grown into a leading organization supporting women at all stages of their tech careers. WIT was at the forefront of it all. Did you know that in the 90s WIT registered the domain name womenintechnology.org? This was well before any national groups were even thinking about mobilizing via the internet. We got the URL! It’s the reason why we receive inquiries on our web site from every corner of the world. From being among the first to establish an online presence to providing extensive networking and professional development opportunities, WIT has always been at the forefront of advocating for women in technology.
